TOM:Melbourne 2016

This was my participation in the TOM Global Event 2016 in the Swinburne University of Technology.
This is an event to gather Engineers and Designers with the purpose of developing Open Source solutions for people with disabilities.

My team (Num2) had this challenge (description from TOM webpage):

The challenge: Christian has Hemiplegia and is paralysed from the neck down. He struggles daily with the functionality of his current wheelchair headrest. They are often invariably fixed and inflexible.

Christian’s challenge is that when he needs to look down and tilt his head forward the headrest comes away and no longer provides support. This is a problem for people who have limited lateral (sideways) muscular control. Christian’s challenge is a system that provides headrest support (including lateral support) through the degree of movement of the head and neck from upright to forward (chin on chest).

The Solution: Christian’s team came up with a 3d printed head rest that is controlled by simple electronics that moves with his head motion, constantly giving him support and control.

SOLVESPACE – parametric 2d/3d CAD Open Source

SOLVESPACE is a parametric 3d CAD program that was released as a version 2.0, available for download as GPL’d free software.
SolveSpace es un nuevo software CAD parametrico 3D que recientemente ha sido liberado con una licencia GPL. Está orientado al diseño mecánico y solo esta disponible para Windows, pero aparentemente corre bien en Linux-GNU usando Wine.

HELYX-OS para OpenFOAM

HELYX-OS is an Open Source Graphical User Interface designed to work with the latest version of OPENFOAM®.
OpenFOAM es un software CFD muy conocido, pero debido a que no posee GUI es poco amigable para usuarios no expertos. Una reciente aplicación intenta cambiar esto: HELYX-OS, una interfaz gráfica de usuario de Código Abierto para OPENFOAM®. Mira el video para de como trabaja.

Open Source Parametric Software

I want to show two interesting projects about open source parametric software. The first one is Openshapefactory, a program based on Open CASCADE library for Windows developed by Alex Peña, and the second one is Yeti, a live programming interface for Rhino developed by Daniel Davis. Both programs are under development, but can be used to build parametric models writing code. They can export geometries to other formats, too.
Dos interesantes proyectos de software paramétrico open source. El primero es Openshapefactory, un programa basado en las librerías Open CASCADE que corre en Windows y que fue desarrollado por Alex Peña. El segundo es Yeti, una interface para Rhino desarrollada por Daniel Davis. Ambos programas están en desarrollo, pero pueden ser usados para crear modelos paramétricos por medio de escritura de código y exportar las geometrías a otros formatos.

Novedades en FreeCAD

Es muy interesante poder ver como un proyecto open source va desarrollándose, como se anuncian mejoras y se espera poder probarlas una vez sea liberada la última versión. Un caso así es el programa FreeCAD, un software CAD/CAM/CAE 3D libre donde Yorik, arquitecto y uno de los desarrolladores de FreeCAD, va anunciando en su blog las próximas novedades del programa relacionadas con funcionalidades BIM para proyectos de arquitectura. Los invito que visiten su página para felicitarle por su trabajo y si lo desean involucrarse en este proyecto que va teniendo ya muy buena pinta.
